Fourth Grade

Language Arts/Reading

Fourth grade students continue to develop skills in reading comprehension and critical thinking. Using various genres, students are taught and challenged to read with understanding, using text and personal experiences to draw conclusions. Fourth graders use several reading sources, textbook, chapter books, and Accelerated Reading books.

Language Arts/English

In fourth grade, students continue to expand and perfect their writing skills. Students continue to focus on grammar, sentence structure, and parts of speech. Vocabulary and spelling strategies are vital in assisting students in learning to become good writers.

Mathematics

Fourth grade Mathematics follows Common Core State Standards. Focus is on operations and algebraic thinking, numbers and operations in base ten, numbers and operations with fractions, measurement and data, and geometry. Students entering fourth grade are expected to know the basic facts of each operation, addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division. The textbook is available on the SMARTboard and is used in daily instruction.

Religion

Fourth grader students study the Old Testament and the Ten Commandments. They learn about the Catholic Church and the Liturgical calendar. Students study the parts of the Mass and learn the names of the items on the altar used by the priest. All fourth graders attend and participate in the weekly school community Mass. They serve as the choir, altar servers, and gift bearers for the year.

Fourth graders use spelling patterns and strategies to improve skills.

Science

Fourth grade students continue to expand their knowledge in Life and Physical Sciences. Students also study Earth and Space Science and the human body system. Learning is enhanced with activities and instruction on the SMARTboard.

Social Studies

Fourth grade Social Studies focuses on five themes of geography, location, place, human-environment interaction, movement, and regions. Fourth graders study Florida History, which examines the state’s early history, Native Americans, European Explorers, and Catholic Missionaries. They trace Florida’s path to statehood, learn about state government, and famous Floridians who have impacted the state. This history comes to life through a guided field trip to St. Augustine. Students will also learn how to effectively read and use charts, graphs, political and physical maps. Classes are enhanced with lessons on the SMARTboard. The text is available to students at home through an online resource.

Fifth Grade

Language Arts/Reading

Fifth grade students continue to learn to read from a wide variety of genres, texts, media sources. Students learn to compare and contrast various types of literature. They learn to discern key ideas and details within a body of work and to analyze themes. Fifth graders learn to become independent, proficient, and fluent readers.

Language Arts/English

Fifth grade students continue to strengthen writing skills by expanding knowledge in areas of grammar, sentence structure, capitalization, and punctuation. Students will learn the importance of development and organization skills that are required to write with clarity and coherence.

Mathematics

Fifth Grade students continue to expand skills required to be effective problem solvers. Students will understand concepts, and knowledge of basic facts. They will expand computational skills and ability to select appropriate strategies required in problem solving. Fifth graders continue to build skills with fractions and decimals. Various interactive websites are utilized with the SMARTboard. This class is designed to prepare students for middle school math.

Religion

Fifth grade students continue on their faith journey as they develop a greater understanding of the fundamental teachings of the Catholic Church. Students grow in their understanding of Catholic beliefs, practices, traditions, and prayers. The focal point in fifth grade is a detailed study of the seven sacraments and learning what it means to live as a member of the Catholic community.

Spelling

Fifth grade students expand and enhance spelling skills. Students learn spelling techniques and are provided instruction that promotes increased development in thinking, phonics, vocabulary, reading, and writing.

Science

Fifth grade students are actively engaged in learning about the world and the scientific principles that are required to understand and interpret information. Physical science topics cover matter, energy, and motion. Students will study Earth science examining earth, resources, and weather. Life science will focus on plants and animals. Interactive websites used with SMARTboard technology enhances classroom instruction.

Social Studies

Fifth grade students focus on the relationships between people, places, and environments in the Americas. Students cover topics from the earliest migrations in America through the 21st Century. Activities strengthen map and globe reading skills and proficiency with time line and graph interpretation.
